Ten Apples Up On Top Activities

Last year we spent a whole week doing activities with Dr. Seuss books with Big Brother and while I wasn't planning on doing that again this year... I obviously had a change of heart.

I picked up the book, Ten Apples Up on Top -- a favorite around here, and set up 6 different activities for my toddler.  However, these activities would be suitable for children 2-4 years.  So your preschooler would enjoy these activities as well!

Thanks for stopping by!  The original post has since been edited and updated; if you are looking for our Onomatopoeia Art Activity it now has a post of its own.  Check it out here!

10 Apples Up on Top: "Apple" Stickers

Supplies:

Little Sis LOVES stickers so she was all about this activity!

For this 10 apples up on top activity, I taped a picture of my girl on the bottom of the paper and supplied her with some colored dot stickers.

This is a great fine motor activity for little hands as she had to peel the stickers off and place them on the paper.  Some even ended up on her as well!

If you'd like to "beef'' up this activity, you could number the stickers and write a number somewhere on the sheet so that your child can match numbers.

  • Die
  • small manipulatives
Grab some pom poms or other red manipulatives to be your apples.

To play, roll the dice and add that many "apples" to your tree.

You could also start with apples in the tree and try to be the first to pick all the apples off the tree.

Ten Apples Up on Top Activities:  APPLE CRAFT

Supplies:

Try this simple apple craft after reading the book, Ten Apples Up on Top!

I printed out an apple template and gave Little Sis red, yellow, and green tape.

Tearing the tape was a bit hard for her, so I helped tear the tape in different sizes and Little Sis covered the apple.  Another option would be to have your child use scissors to cut the tape him/herself.  OR, instead of tape, you could do this with pieces of torn paper.

Once it was covered, we cut out the apple and now have a pretty piece of art!

Ten Apples Up on Top Activities: COUNTING APPLES

Supplies

After reading the book, we practiced counting to ten with 10 "apples"{aka red Duplo blocks!}

For a competitive twist, add a die and grab 10 more blocks for another player.  Take turns rolling a die and adding that many apple blocks to a tower.  First to 10, wins!

Or, work on number recognition and sequencing skills by writing numbers 1-10 with a dry erase marker on the blocks.  Then your child can make a tower of ten apples on top in number order.
