Matching Letters Easter Egg Activity

3.27.2015

Work on recognizing and matching letters of the alphabet with your preschooler with this fun Easter egg activity.  This activity also encourages strengthening those fine motor skills, matching skills, and gets those little ones moving around by turning it into a scavenger hunt.  And what kiddo could pass up on a good scavenger hunt?!

Bring our your stash of plastic Easter eggs and set up a FUN matching letters Easter egg activity!

Last week I set up a fun and simple Shape Scavenger Hunt for my 2 year old, but ironically my 4 year old got to it first!  So I decided to set up another Scavenger Hunt for her to work on matching letters of the alphabet.

To prep this activity, you'll need:

EASTER EGG LETTER MATCHING ACTIVITY

I used plastic letter manipulatives I had purchased from the Dollar Store some time ago for this activity, but small letter beads, letters of alphabet puzzle, or another letter manipulative should work, too... as long as they fit into your plastic Easter eggs.

To create the letter matching sheet, I simply placed the letters in alphabetical order on our printer/ copier {like I did to create our Button Bingo game}.

An alternative way to make the matching sheet would be to simply write the letters and/or use stickers.  If you choose to write the letters for the matching sheet, you could work on uppercase/lowercase matching, instead.

Next, I put each letter in a plastic Easter egg.

I meant to hide the eggs around the house, but Little Sis decided she was done with "quiet time" a little too soon!  So instead of being hidden, they eggs were all mixed up on our kitchen table; she didn't seem to mind though!

However, learn from my mistake and hide those eggs FAST! ha!

Young kids LOVE having an excuse to move, so after filling each plastic Easter egg with a letter manipulative, hide them around the house and/or outside (if you are blessed with warm weather).

MATCH THE LETTER

Once your child has found all the eggs, have him/her open them and match the letters in the Easter eggs to the letter on the recording sheet.

Manipulating the Easter eggs proved to be a great way to practice fine motor skills!

Some of the eggs were definitely trickier to open then others-- requiring a bit more strength to squeeze open than some others!

Once Little Sis cracked open the egg, I said the name of the letter, and we worked on singing through the alphabet to find the letter on the matching sheet.

Continue matching the letter manipulatives to the recording sheet.

Once all the letters have been matched, I think it is only appropriate to sing the "ABC Song!"

And fair warning, your child may LOVE this idea so much he/she may ask you to hide all the eggs again!  However, I am pretty sure it was the hiding of the eggs they loved best of all. ha!

FUN MATCHING LETTERS ACTIVITY

She's definitely come a long way in her ability to recognize certain letters!  I'd like to think it is because of the many other letter recognition activities we have done! ; )
