A Peek at our Week with Blueberries 4 Sal

9.13.2012

Before Five in A Row is a precursor to Five in a Row and Beyond; it is meant to be a "gentle" introduction to learning.

Books selections in the B4 manual are not to be "rowed" for five days, although in an effort to "beef up" the lessons for "Blueberries for Sal", we did in fact, read it all five days.

T seemed to enjoy the book very much and thought the mix up between Little Sal and Mother Bear and Little Bear and Little Sal's mother was quite funny : )

This post isn't going to be as detailed as my other ones, but these are some of our homeschool happenings:
  • began working on Explode the Code, Book 2; and thoroughly enjoyed any writing he had to do because of his new Smencils!!  T's favorite scents are: Root Beer, Watermelon, and Grape.
  • played Odd Todd/ Even Steven
  • Worked on classification/ grouping with his gazillion cars
  • made a blueberry pie craft
  • pointed out pictures in the book that are different than today (i.e. type of car Little Sal's mother drove, clothes the mother wore, items in kitchen)
  • talked about how Blueberries for Sal is 2 stories in 1
  • talked about how God's Little Boy is 'Brave' because God is always with us
  • read a couple of fiction and nonfiction books about hibernation and bears
  • Completed story-related extension questions
And here is what I managed to take pictures of:
Blueberries for Sal Preschool Activities
  • After reading, Blueberries Grow on a Bush and The Berry Book, T made a "Seasons of a Blueberry Bush" craft using his hand print.  For the blueberry bush in the Fall, T insisted that the leaves turn red like the trees...

  • Blueberry Donuts: I adapted the recipe from this one and the donuts were GONE by Noon.

Next up, is Mr. Gumpy's Motorcar from Vol. 2

I'd love for you to follow along so you never miss out on one of our fun activities we share at School Time Snippets!
