Learning with Five in a Row:: Wee Gillis

2.15.2013

We re-visited author, Munro Leaf while rowing the Scottish story of a young boy nick named Wee Gillis, who must forever choose with whom to live--his mother's relations in the lowlands or his father's relations in the highlands.  He chooses here nor there, but right in the middle and "plays the biggest bagpipes in all of Scotland."

Compare & Contrast

Sorry for the blur, but this was for our Compare/ Contrast lesson.  I photocopied the two pictures of Wee Gillis eating his oatmeal, which appear to be the same, but upon closer examination there are several differences.  T found them all.  He has always been good with this sort of activity!

Science:
We talked about Fog & one night during our row we actually got to see it!

We completed a lung capacity experiment from an Usborne Science book; T had a lot of fun with that activity!  We made a model lung and timed how long he could hold his breath!
We also ate oatmeal for breakfast like Wee Gillis a couple times during the week-- not on purpose though!  I had yet to make it to the grocery store, so oatmeal it was!  We also made some Shortbread cookies-- a Scottish food-- but T wasn't a fan.  And how could we not read this book and listen to bagpipes play by watching videos on YouTube?!
