A few weekends ago the kids took their annual trip to the pumpkin farm with my parents to pick out their pumpkins, and as of just yesterday... just a few days before Halloween, we had yet to do anything with them.
I needed a pumpkin decorating idea that was fairly quick & didn't call for sharp knives & scooping out pumpkin guts-- just didn't want to go there, so what was the next best thing??
With Halloween a couple days away, we had to do something! I checked my Fall/ Thanksgiving Pinterest board and found the perfect no-carve pumpkin activity; we made these cool Crayon Melted Pumpkins!!
We have done a crayon melt activity before with Big Brother's name; I can't believe the idea never crossed my mind to melt crayons on pumpkins!! Thank goodness for the creativity of others! Melted Crayon Art is such a neat activity!
Easy.
Fun.
Simple.
Little Mess.
.... And we had a slew of broken, un-wrapped crayons, so this worked out perfect!
Melted Crayon Pumpkin
- pumpkin
- broken crayons
- glue gun
- blow dryer
- large empty box
Crayon Pumpkin
Gather all the needed supplies.
Have the kiddos collect all the broken crayons from your crayon stash, and peel off the wrappers.
** Alternatively, you can buy a new box of cheap crayons just for this pumpkin decoration.
Warning!! The longest task is prepping the crayons. You'll need to take the wrapper of each crayon.
Once the crayons are un-wrapped, use the glue gun to glue them around the stem of the pumpkin.
Big Brother took charge of the glue gun a couple times, but just keep a watchful eye... hot glue hurts, so make sure it is a low-heat glue gun if little hands are involved! Or just leave the gluing to the adults, so no little fingers get hurt.
When you are ready to melt the crayons, put the pumpkin in a box or else you will have crayon melt splatters all over everything.
Putting the pumpkin in a tall box will help protect you and your surroundings from crayon splatter! So don't skip this step!
Next, plug that blow dryer in and melt those crayons!
It does take the crayons a bit to warm up and start to melt, so give it some time.
Once they start melting, it is so neat to watch! Little kids will LOVE this part!
This pumpkin decorating idea was so COOL, we decided to do three pumpkins!
Aren't they so pretty?!
** Update!! The HOT new trend seems to be white pumpkins & this melted crayon activity would be PERFECT for those pumpkins; then you'll really get to see the vibrant colors!
Hard to believe that it's the end of October! I hope you and your family have enjoyed some pumpkin fun, and if not... it's not too late!!
What a fun activity to do. I hope T feels better this Halloween. Thanks for sharing with Afterschool!
