Paper Plate Lion's Mane Scissor Skills Craftivity

10.03.2014

Our latest preschool learning activities were inspired by the circus.

We worked through a circus themed number puzzle for math, vinegar and baking soda eruptions in animal cookie cutters for sensory play, and threw in a color matching activity, a simple letter sort, and a scissor skills activity we are sharing with you today!

As you may know already, Little Sis LOVES scissors and cutting!

Thankfully she has kept to cutting paper; often times as soon as we are in the school room, she grabs a pair of scissors and construction paper and starts snipping away!

If you have a young child who enjoys cutting too, check out our other activities:

So yes, it should be no surprise that we have another cutting activity for you : ) As mentioned, this activity was inspired by our Circus Theme Preschool Week.  Little Sis practiced her scissor skills by cutting/ creating a lion's mane.

To set up this activity to practice cutting skills, you'll need:

First, have your child paint the paper plate.  I grabbed yellow, orange, and brown paint as I just couldn't decide what color our lion should be!

Once you have given it time to dry, add your googly eyes, a nose, mouth, and whiskers with a black marker.

Next, encourage your child to cut into the sides of the paper plate to create a mane-- cut straight lines around the paper plate.

Such a cute and fun activity for a circus theme... or just because!

My preschooler loved this activity-- she was so proud of her lion and I loved that this creative craft activity allowed her to practice those much needed fine motor skills!
