valentine's day sight word activity

Here's a festive Valentine's Day inspired literacy activity for your beginning readers.  Help them learn to recognize, read, and write some of the most common words he/she will find while reading a book.  This hands-on sight word activity is sure to be a fun one!

Valentine's Day Sight Word Activity

I turned this activity into a unique sensory experience, too by placing the sight word matching cards in a sensory bin.  Along with dried black beans, I added some fake rose petals, flowers, and sequined hearts.

Add a pair of kid-safe tweezers, and you're also encouraging fine motor skill development, too!

If you plan to re-use this activity, laminate the sight word matching cards and recording/ tracing sheet and use a dry-erase marker to trace the words.

The printable includes two match and trace printable sets.  Each set contains 12 sight words.

Once the activity is prepped, have the child pick up a heart shaped sight word card and find it on the recording sheet.  Have the child read you the word and/or read the word to the child.

There are some sight words that can be sounded out phonetically, but there are others that are spelled a certain way due to certain spelling rules; explain to the child why a word is said a certain way if there is interest.

Provide the child with some type of writing utensil, and have the child trace the matching sight word.

My kiddos love using colorful markers over pencils; markers are much more fun to use!

Have your child continue to match and trace the sight words until the recording sheet is filled in.

Enjoy this festive and hands-on sight word activity!
