Word Family BINGO Reading Game

2.09.2016

Learning to read is a process of blending letter sounds to make words.

There are a few different ways and methods to do this; one way is to teach your child to read by word families.

Word families are groups of words that have a similar pattern, like cat, sat, rat, bat.  Those words end in -at.

A fun way to introduce and reinforce word families is with our Word Family Bingo Game.

Just grab a couple six-sided blocks, like our foam ones we used for our Velcro Color Tower or wooden blocks, pen, paper, and bingo manipulatives.

What you need:

  • Foam Blocks {2 different colors} We used a set we found at a craft store, but the blocks I linked to on Amazon are very similar.
  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Bingo Manipulatives

How to Play:
On one foam die, write a word family ending on each side.  You might choose a one or two different endings, or write a different word family on each side.

On the other die, write a letter that would form a word with the word family endings.

Now on a half sheet of paper, write 9 combinations of words that can be made using the word family dice.

To play, simply roll the dice to make a word.

Encourage your child to blend the beginning letter sound with the word family to read the word.

If a player has that word on his/her game board, place a bingo manipulative on that word.

When a player gets 3 in a row, call out "Bingo!"  and start a new game!
